Now, a topic that is near my heart: golf. For many professionals, the golf course has become an extension of the conference room. Deals are discussed, relationships are strengthened, and trust is built. While a round of golf may feel informal, the way you conduct yourself can leave a lasting impression and, in some cases, influence long-term professional relationships.
If business ever finds its way onto the fairway, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are a few tips to help you approach business golf with confidence and professionalism.
Arrive early.
Punctuality matters. Arriving at least 20 minutes before your tee time shows respect for your playing partners and sets a positive tone for the round.
Be gracious with the tab.
If you invite a client to play, plan to cover the round. When golfing with a supervisor or colleague, offering to pay is always a courteous gesture, even if it is declined. If you’re the one being invited at least offer to buy a drink to say ‘thank you’ after the round.
Keep conversations comfortable.
If business topics arise, privacy helps. Sharing a cart can create a natural space for conversation without worrying about being overheard.
Limit alcohol during play.
While drinks with friends are common on the course, business golf is best approached with moderation. Staying focused ensures you represent yourself well.
Respect the pace of play.
Your score is less important than keeping the game moving. Being ready for your shot and keeping up with the group ahead shows respect for everyone on the course.
Know when to move on.
Spending too long searching for a lost ball slows the group down. Taking a penalty and continuing play keeps the round and the conversation flowing.
At its core, business golf is about relationships, respect, and trust. Those same principles are also the foundation of strong financial planning. If you would like to talk more about professional relationships, financial strategy, or long term prosperity, our office is always happy to continue the conversation, on or off the course.
